Demo Day: 10 awesome start-ups you should not miss

30 OCTOBER 2012 — The 2012 MIT-CHIEF “Pitch to China” Business Plan Contest was launched on July 1, 2012, receiving approximately 160 submissions in multiple industries including Clean technology, Healthcare, Web/IT, and Products/Services. Six finalist teams will be invited to the conference this November to pitch their ideas and compete for a total of $20,000 in prizes.

This year, an exclusive Mentorship Program has been created for our top selected applicant entrepreneurs, who are getting ready to roll up their sleeves and kick-start their promising businesses.

23 OCTOBER 2012 — MIT-CHIEF TechEX is a technology exhibition held together with MIT-CHIEF, one of the premier conferences in MIT focusing on technology innovation in China. The technology exhibition comprises demos that are intended as real, practical, and interactive proof of the presenters' ideas. The exhibition will allow the more than 600 conference attendees to view and interact first-hand with live prototypes of innovative solutions and ideas and to see leading-edge technology at work. It also provides the demo presenters a wonderful opportunity to discuss the working applications or prototypes with peers and professionals and attract potential collaborations and investors, especially if they are interested in Greater China market. We will also give awards to the best demos during the exhibition day.

06 OCTOBER 2012 — At the 2012 MIT-CHIEF Launch Ceremony, held at the Marriott Hotel, Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA, the organizing team announced this year's forum topics and confirmed speakers for the second annual conference. This event also marks the opening of online ticket sales for this year's event.

Contest Spotlight: From Ph.D. to CEO

19 SEPTEMBER 2012 — 2011 MIT-CHIEF Business Plan Contest Third Prize winner Ziyan Wu is originally from Guangzhou, China. Upon receiving his bachelor's and master's degrees in Engineering from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China, he began his Ph.D. studies in Computer and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Albany, NY. Ziyan started his company Azuray with some of his close friends last year in Guangzhou, whose products were aimed at mainstream market in China. His product, FlexVision, is envisioned as a leading provider of 3D scanning, positioning, and coordinate measurement systems to measure large-scale 3D surfaces, and is currently the only major provider in China of this type of targeted solution.

Contest Spotlight: Wodache

07 AUGUST 2012 — Eric Wang, CEO and co-founder of Wodache and 2011 MIT-CHIEF Business Plan Contest second-prize winner, joined us last month to talk about his company and his experiences with MIT-CHIEF.

Born in Jinan China, Eric Yihe Wang moved to the States with his parents at the age of 16. Eric received his bachelor’s degree in Economics and Mathematics from Columbia University. After graduation, he began working at Merrill Lynch as an Investment Banking Analyst. Eric also spent a year and a half in Europe participating in a fellowship program for development studies, which was sponsored by the European Union. It was during his time in Europe that Eric recognized the serious traffic congestion problem in China. Believing there was a market-based solution for the traffic problem in China, he wrote his thesis on a car-sharing concept and started his own business called “Wodache", which translates to "sharing the journey".

Second annual conference to be held this fall

29 JUNE 2012 — The MIT-CHIEF organizing team is pleased to announce that the second annual conference will be held on November 16-18, 2012, continuing to focus on its core values of technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and creating a bridge between China and the United States. In our 2012 conference, we will feature:

Keynote speeches and panel discussions
Leading academic experts, industry specialists, and government officials will be invited to deliver keynote speeches at MIT-CHIEF. They will be presenting industry insights, and latest research and discoveries during the event. Detailed panel agenda and speaker names will be announced soon.

Business plan contest
MIT-CHIEF aims to provide a platform that connects cutting-edge technologies and revolutionary business models with experienced industry veterans who offer expert advice as well as resources. MIT-CHIEF’s Business Plan Contest registration will start on July 1st. More details will be announced soon.

Networking opportunities
MIT-CHIEF aims to build an active community for entrepreneurs and investors who are interested in innovation and entrepreneurship related to China’s market. Members of the community will be able to mutually benefit from a large pool of information and resources supported by the community of veterans and experts. The interactive community will facilitate collaborations between ideas and capital, formation of business partnerships, as well as establishing connections with industry peers and leaders.

15 OCTOBER 2011 — The MIT-China Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum (MIT-CHIEF) is an annually-held conference and high-profile platform for intellectual exchange to foster deeper and broader collaboration between China and the United States in technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship. On November 19-20, 2011, leading authorities from academia, industries, enterprises, businesses, and government institutions, from both China and the US, will convene at MIT to deliver presentations and showcase their work. We intend to address not only current developments and collaborations between enterprises in the US and China in cutting-edge fields such as clean technology, information technology, health care, and biotechnology, but also policy-making issues and future directions China should take to facilitate continued innovation in the country. Additionally, for budding entrepreneurs, we also feature a "Pitch to China" Business Plan Contest with cash prizes totalling $18,000.
